Launch Day 5 • Business Spotlight: Cottage Letters

Today’s business spotlight is on Cottage Letters. This is the week of giveaways as we celebrate the launch of my new website. When I was honing my craft as a newborn and motherhood photographer in Tallahassee, Elizabeth of Cottage Letters was having her first son. I went down to West Palm Beach where they were living at the time to photograph her, her husband Nathan, and their new baby.

She has since added two more boys to their brunch and four more moves throughout the Southeast onto their punchcard. They recently settled in Cordele, Georgia where her husband took a position as student pastor at First Baptist Church Cordele.

Elizabeth, like so many creative mamas who are home nurturing babies, found herself in need of an outlet. She took to the craft of hand lettering and has blossomed and bloomed. She does incredible work and custom pieces for all different occasions. You can see her designs on her Facebook and Instagram pages where she shares videos in her stories often. She’s done classes in the past and I hope she’ll be doing more in the future because she definitely has the heart of a teacher and I’d love to sit and learn this beautiful art from her.

As I was re-branding my website, I immediately thought of Elizabeth to hand letter a phrase that is near and dear to my heart personally. It is a phrase that is included in the end note of many emails I send to new mamas and mamas to be. It was a phrase that was said to me in my earliest days of motherhood by my aunt, and I have carried it with me ever since. It has held true to this journey, and in the more challenging seasons of parenting it has been a shining reminder of another season to come that will bring light after what may have been a shadow filled hike with roots and rocks trying to trip me along the way.

There are certain places that just make everything easier.

The light falls right. The space feels calm. The family relaxes without even realizing it.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the locations I keep coming back to, and what it is about them that works. Some are outdoors with gorgeous natural canopy and soft, open light. Some are quieter, more tucked away. Some I discovered by accident and now I wouldn't trade them.

What they all have in common is this: they feel true to the families I photograph here in Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Unhurried. Warm. Real. Give me all the "old Florida" vibes.

Swipe through to see a few of my favorites right now. Do you have a favorite spot around Tallahassee, or somewhere nearby that means something to your family? I would genuinely love to hear it - drop it in the comments or send me a message. I am always looking to grow this list.

Seen here are Goodwood Museum and Gardens, St. Theresa, Summer Camp Beach, Park Avenue Chain of Parks, and Dorothy B. Oven Park.
That’s not a filter. That’s the finish.

Editing isn’t about fixing something that went wrong, it’s the last step in creating the image. The light, the color, the feeling. It all comes together in the edit.

Raw files are a little like unfinished film negatives. They’re where we start, not where we land. What you receive is the image as it was always meant to look.

This is the part of the work I genuinely love. And it shows up in every single image I deliver.
