Creating Holiday Magic: Tallahassee Santa Photography Sessions

Guess what, Tallahassee families? It’s almost that time of year again—the time when the man in red rolls into town for a quick visit to some of my littlest clients, and we invite you to join in the fun with our Tallahassee Santa Photography Sessions! These sessions have become a favorite tradition for so many, and we’re so excited to be bringing the magic back for a 7th year!

We’re keeping the tradition of the clean white walls—so many families love using this for their holiday cards and as a yearly keepsake. Santa will be in town the first weekend of November.

This year I’m so excited that we’ll get him a SECOND weekend, this time in December just as he kicks off his busy season. We are very fortunate that he’s carved out some prime time to see my little friends on Saturday, December 7. Though, if you’ll be wanting to use these photos for Christmas cards, you’ll need to book one of the November Tallahassee Santa photography sessions.

Last year we introduced the option to add on a quick family photo during your Tallahassee Santa photography session. This was well received and we’re offering it again this year. This photo can be with or without Santa.

Laid-back, fun, a little bit luxury… just how we like it.

Tallahassee Santa Photography Session

All about Santa:

Santa is a 30+ year registered nurse, excellent with children, and will prepare for your child ahead of time. To do this, he asks that you fill out a brief questionnaire about your child (you’ll be prompted to do so when you book).

a man in a santa garment

Here are the details:

Each session includes 5 minutes with Santa and 3 digital files to download and use as you like. These are perfect for up to four siblings, keeping things simple and fun! I know from experience this is enough time to have magical interactions and create great photos. This is the sweet spot. Children are happy with this amount of time and our Santa is able to be at his best for them.

Photos will be ready within 2 weeks of the event date with your images delivered in an online preview gallery for sharing, downloading your included 3 images, and ordering prints if desired. I’ll be a fly on the wall photographing their interaction and then we’ll do some directed pictures with Santa.

Want to Add a Little Extra? We’ve Got You:

  • Family Portrait: Jump in for a family picture for an extra $150. Because let’s be honest, you look great, too, and everyone could use that one, perfect picture for your holiday card.
  • Pre-purchase the full gallery upgrade for $100 off. Can’t narrow it down to 3 Santa photos you love? You can pre-purchase the full gallery download so you’ll be able to download all of your Santa images. If you also opted to take advantage of the Family Photo ad on, those images are included in this full gallery download.
  • MY BIGGEST SUGGESTIONS/MOM HACK: As a mom of 4, we are a busy family but I don’t want to skimp on experiences. If you know you’ll want to do Santa and family photos this year but don’t think you can manage to do a full family session. I HIGHLY suggest taking advantage of both the add-on options (family photo and the full gallery upgrade. This just checks so many boxes in such an easy experience.

Looking forward to sharing some holiday cheer with you all!

Vacation Family Photos: Capturing Real Moments (Without the Stress) on Your Family Trip

Stress-Free Vacation Family Photos

Picture this: everyone is finally in the same place. The cousins are running around, your mother-in-law is trying to wrangle the toddler, and somewhere between the sunscreen and the sand toys, you think – we should really get some photos while we’re all together. Travel and vacation family photos sessions are some of my absolute favorites, because the setting is already special, the people you love are already there, and the only job is to capture what’s already happening. That said, a little intention goes a long way. If you’ve ever wondered how to make vacation photos feel real rather than rushed, this post is for you.

When Things Don’t Go as Planned (And Why That’s Okay)

One of the sessions that has stayed with me most vividly was a beach session where the rain rolled in fast. It rained for most of my one-hour drive to the coast, and I’ll be honest – I was watching those clouds closely the whole way there. The family had everyone from around the country gathered at their beach house for just a few days, so rescheduling simply wasn’t an option. We had a backup plan ready to photograph indoors if the weather didn’t cooperate.

And then, just as I was arriving, the sky cleared.

We all headed out to the sand and water, and the session unfolded beautifully. That experience reminded me of something I always want my clients to know: flexibility and a good attitude matter more than perfect conditions. When families come into a session willing to roll with whatever happens, the photos almost always reflect that ease and joy right back at them.

The Real Secret to Getting Genuine Smiles

A lot of photographers will tell you to “just be yourselves” during a session. I understand the intention behind that advice, but in practice, it can leave families standing there thinking – okay, but what does that actually mean?

Here is what I actually do.

I start with a group photo of everyone together. There are two reasons for this. First, it checks the most important box right away – the whole-family image is usually what everyone came for, so we get it done while energy is still fresh. Second, I use prompts and little “activities” with the group that are designed to get some genuine laughs going. The moment one person starts laughing, it spreads. Once the ice is broken, everything that follows feels natural and easy.

After we’ve loosened up and worked through the rest of the session, I almost always circle back and retake that very first whole-group photo. Sometimes the second version is even better than the first, because everyone is more relaxed and comfortable by then. Sometimes the original holds up just fine. Either way, we have options.

What makes vacation sessions work, in my experience, comes down to one thing: when families feel at ease, the genuine connection shows up in the images. That warmth isn’t manufactured – it’s already there. My job is just to create the space where it comes forward naturally.

What Families Most Often Get Wrong Before the Session

If there’s one thing I find myself addressing again and again before vacation sessions, it’s outfits. I’ve seen both ends of this, and both can trip a session up before it even starts.

On one end, families don’t put enough thought into coordinating, and things end up looking disjointed – especially when everyone is traveling from different cities and can’t lay the outfits out together before the day arrives.

On the other end, families think they’re making it simple by putting everyone in the same thing – the classic jeans and white shirts, for example. The intention is good, but matching outfits can end up looking flat and a little stiff in photos.

The good news is that both of these issues have a straightforward solution:

  • Use the Pinterest boards I send when you book. I put these together specifically to help families coordinate in a way that looks cohesive, intentional, and genuinely beautiful in photos.
  • When in doubt, lean into neutrals and denim shades of blue. These tones work beautifully together, photograph well in natural light, and give a timeless, polished look without anyone having to match exactly.

A little outfit planning goes a long way, and it’s one of the simplest ways to make sure the final images look as good as the moments they capture.

Why Vacation Family Photos Are Worth the Intention

The seasons of family life move fast. The trip where everyone gathered at the beach house, the summer your kids were that particular age, the year the cousins were all small enough to pile onto the same blanket – these are the moments that deserve more than a blurry phone snapshot.

A well-captured vacation session becomes something you look at for years. It becomes wall art in your home, a reminder of a season that felt full and sweet, and eventually something your children will hold onto long after the trip itself is a memory.

That’s why I believe bringing a photographer into your vacation – or reaching out to a local photographer near your destination – is worth every bit of the planning it takes. The photos that result are not just documentation. They are part of your family’s story, and your family’s story deserves to be beautifully told.

Simple Local Spots for Safe, Stress-Free Maternity Photos

Tallahassee has some beautiful locations for maternity photos

Choosing a location for your maternity session can feel surprisingly overwhelming – especially when you’re already juggling a full schedule, a growing belly, and approximately a thousand other things on your mind. But here’s what I want you to know before you spend another minute scrolling through Instagram trying to figure out where to go: the right location isn’t about finding the most dramatic backdrop. It’s about finding a place where you feel comfortable, where the light works in your favor, and where the whole experience feels less like a production and more like a peaceful morning with someone who genuinely loves documenting this season of your life.

Why Location Matters More Than You Think (But Not in the Way You’d Expect)

Most people assume that a beautiful setting automatically means beautiful photos. And while I completely understand that thinking, it’s only part of the picture.

What actually makes a maternity session feel right is a combination of things – the light, the ease of moving through the space, and the overall energy of the morning. When those elements come together, something shifts. Mom relaxes. The session flows. And that ease shows up in every single frame.

One of my favorite spots for maternity sessions in Tallahassee is Goodwood Museum and Gardens. There are so many beautiful pockets to photograph within a relatively small area, which means we’re not trekking long distances or wearing you out before we’ve even gotten started. When the session feels like we’re simply taking a gentle walk through a garden, that comfort comes through in the images. That’s the goal every time.

What I’m Actually Evaluating When I Recommend a Spot

When a client asks me where we should shoot, I’m not just thinking about how pretty a place looks on a map. I’m thinking about light – specifically, where the best light will fall at the time we’re shooting and how it will land on your face.

This is something I want every client to understand: a stunning natural setting means very little if the light isn’t working for you. Poor light on your face can make you look sickly, washed out, or like you have deep shadows under your eyes – and no one wants that in their maternity gallery. My job is to find the right spots and angles within any location so that you look radiant, not just so that the background looks nice.

Here’s what I’m evaluating when I think through location options:

  • Light quality and direction – Where is the sun at the time of our session, and how will it interact with the space?
  • Ease of movement – How much walking is involved? For a maternity session especially, I want you comfortable and conserving your energy.
  • Variety within a small area – Can we find several distinct, beautiful backdrops without having to drive to multiple locations?
  • Shade and cover options – Is there flexibility if the light shifts or the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Why I Prefer Morning Sessions for Maternity Work

This might surprise you, because golden hour evening sessions are popular for a reason – the light is warm, soft, and genuinely gorgeous. I do schedule evening sessions too. But for maternity photography specifically, I almost always recommend the morning, and here’s why.

By late afternoon in North Florida, the heat is no joke. We’re talking temperatures that can run 20 degrees warmer than the morning hours. For a pregnant mom, that kind of heat isn’t just uncomfortable – it can cause real physical issues like swelling and sweating that make the session harder on your body and show up in the photos.

In the morning, you’re fresh. The air is cooler. The light is softer and more forgiving. You haven’t spent the whole day on your feet yet. Everything about the morning just sets you up to feel and look your best, which is exactly what this session is for.

The Thing Most Clients Stress About (That You Can Let Go Of)

I hear this often: clients worry that they need to come to me with a location already chosen, or that they need to have strong opinions about where we go. They sometimes feel like they should have scouted spots on their own or done more research before reaching out.

You don’t have to do any of that.

Picking the right spot – and the right angle within that spot – is my job. Parks and green spaces can be genuinely stunning, but it has to be the right area within that space at the right time of day. I know these locations well. I know where the light falls in the morning and where it doesn’t. I know which spots photograph beautifully and which ones, despite being visually lovely in person, simply don’t serve you in a photograph.

Your only job is to show up, trust the process, and let yourself enjoy this season. I’ll take care of the rest.

This Season Is Worth Preserving Well

Maternity is one of those chapters that passes so quickly. The bump, the anticipation, the particular way you carry this specific baby – it’s fleeting, and it deserves to be documented with care and intention. The location is a piece of that, but it’s the experience that I want to feel effortless for you.

When you work with a photographer who understands light, knows the local spots, and plans the session with your comfort in mind, the whole thing stops feeling like a task on your to-do list and starts feeling like a gift you’re giving yourself and your growing family.

That’s what I’m here to create for you.

Maclay Gardens Mini Sessions, April 11th only!

Maclay Gardens has come alive with the kind of soft, pastel color that only exists for a brief, beautiful window each spring. It is the sort of setting that makes you want to press pause on everything – the packed calendar, the to-do list, the ordinary Tuesday – and simply be present with the people you love most.

That is exactly what I want to help you do on April 11.

Maclay Gardens Mini Sessions

This is a session designed for real families, at the most beautiful time of year

April 11 is a fixed date, and I only have 5 spots available for families to step into that setting with me.

When those 5 spots are filled, that is it for these spring petite sessions.

Here is what is included when you claim your spot:

  • A wardrobe guide sent in advance so your family looks beautifully coordinated in this setting
  • An online preview gallery where you will select your 3 favorite images for digital download
  • Photos delivered within 2 weeks of your session date, ready to share, print, and display in your home

Your total investment is $275, with a $150 retainer due at booking to secure your spot and the remaining $125 due 7 days before your session.

One more thing worth considering before you book

When you see your full gallery, you may find yourself wanting more than 3 images – and that is a wonderful problem to have. If you choose to upgrade to your full gallery of 5-10 images after your session, that option is available for $200. But if you decide now, before your session date, you can add the full gallery upgrade for $100 off – a meaningful savings for images you will treasure for years to come.

It is entirely your choice, and there is no pressure either way. I just want you to know the option exists so you can make the decision that feels right for your family.

Maclay Gardens Mini Sessions

If you have been wanting to work together and have been waiting for the right moment, this is a lovely one. A short, joyful session, a stunning spring setting, and a simple, accessible investment – it really does not get much easier than this.

Multigenerational Family Photos: Why Grandparents and Extended Family Belong in Your Session

Multigenerational family photo session at the beach in North Florida with grandparents, parents, and young children

The Question I Always Want You to Answer With a Yes

Here is a question I want you to sit with for a moment.

When was the last time you looked at an old family photo and thought, “I wish fewer people were in this”?

I am guessing never.

If anything, you have probably done the opposite – traced a familiar face in the background, recognized a laugh you had almost forgotten, or felt the warmth of a season of life that slipped by faster than you expected. That is exactly why, when families come to me wondering whether to include the grandparents, the cousins, the aunts and uncles who are all in town for just a few days, I always say the same thing: yes, please bring them.

Multigenerational family sessions are some of my most meaningful work as a Tallahassee family photographer. And I want to share a few things I have learned from doing this work that might make you feel more confident saying yes to one.

The Sessions That Stay With You

I have had two sessions with the same extended family that I still think about.

The first time we worked together, everyone happened to be in town at the same time – one of those rare windows when the whole family is under the same sky. The day we had scheduled came in misty and rainy. To their credit, they were wonderful sports about it. We had already planned the session at a location with a large covered porch on the front of the main building, just in case the weather had other ideas. That porch became our backdrop, and we made something beautiful out of what could have been a disappointment.

A few years later, the same family came back – this time at their beach house on Alligator Point, with some new additions to the family. The grandparents were out on the water with the grandchildren, playful and relaxed, and we captured both the big group moments and the smaller, individual family units.

What I remember most about both sessions is how glad everyone was that they had done it. There is a kind of relief that comes at the end of a multigenerational session – a collective exhale that says, we got that.

What I Want You to Know Before You Book

There are a few things I wish every family knew going into a multigenerational session. These are not things you will hear everywhere, but they matter.

Start With the Group Shot – Every Time

My approach is to photograph the full group right at the very beginning of the session, before anything else. That way, everyone – the grandparents, the littlest ones, the family members who drove the farthest – knows that the most important image is already done. From there, we move through all the other groupings with a lighter energy. I always ask for a list of the specific groupings you want ahead of time so we can move through them intentionally and make sure nothing gets missed.

Mobility and Location Go Hand in Hand

This is something I feel strongly about. If a grandparent or family member has any mobility considerations, please share that with me before we choose a location. I have had families withhold this information out of kindness toward that family member, and what ends up happening is that the person finds themselves in an uncomfortable situation – or we miss out on photos we could have taken at a more suitable spot. There is always a way to create beautiful images that honor every person present. I just need to know what we are working with so I can plan accordingly.

Timing Matters More Than You Might Think

Babies and toddlers are almost universally happier in the mornings. That simple fact shapes a lot of my scheduling conversations with families. When you have multiple generations present – including very young children – the time of day can make or break the energy of the session. I will always talk through this with you so we find a window that works for the whole group.

Family Dynamics Are Part of the Picture

Every family has them. There is no judgment here, only practicality. If there are any sensitive dynamics I should be aware of – specific pairings you would prefer I do not suggest, or groupings that need a little extra care – please tell me. It helps me keep the session moving warmly and smoothly, and it protects everyone involved from an awkward moment in front of the camera.

When You Are Not Sure, Say Yes Anyway

If you are on the fence about including someone, include them.

Not sure if the grandparents should be there? Yes.
Wondering if you should get a photo with all the cousins? Yes.
Worried that including an aging family member might slow things down? It might – and you should absolutely do it anyway.

Those are the photos you will be so glad you took. Family structures change. Time moves faster than we want it to. The images that feel the most optional in the planning stages are often the ones that become the most treasured.

We will always find a way to include the people you love.

Why This Work Matters So Much to Me

I grew up with a father who was a hobbyist photographer. The photos he took of our family over the years have given me glimpses into seasons of life I would not otherwise remember clearly – moments of love and connection that might have simply faded. That is exactly why I believe so deeply that your family is your legacy, and it deserves to be beautifully preserved.

Not just for you. For the generations who come after you.

A multigenerational session is not just a nice idea. It is a gift to your future self and to the people who will one day look back at these images and feel the warmth of a family that showed up for each other.

Let’s Capture Your Whole Family – Together

If you have been thinking about planning a session that includes grandparents, extended family, or multiple generations under one frame, I would love to help you make it happen. Whether you are working around a family reunion, a beach trip, or just a rare week when everyone is in the same place at the same time, there is a way to do this beautifully.

Reach out here and let’s start the conversation.

Because you have so much joy ahead of you – and some of it belongs in a frame.

The part of the vacation session no one talks about enough: outfits.

I've seen both ends of this, and honestly, both can trip things up before we even start.

The first version: everyone travels from different cities, nobody coordinates ahead of time, and things end up looking scattered in photos - especially when you can't lay it all out together before the day.

The second version: matching outfits. I know the intention is good. But coordinating everyone in the exact same thing - jeans and white shirts being the classic example - tends to look flat in photos. A little stiff. Less like your family and more like a catalog.

The fix is simpler than most people expect.

Lean into neutrals and denim tones. These photograph beautifully in natural light, they work together without being matchy, and they hold up in a timeless way that won't look dated in five years.

And when you book with me, I send you Pinterest boards I've put together specifically for this - coordinated looks that feel cohesive and genuinely beautiful without anyone having to stress about it.

One of the simplest things you can do to make sure your images look as good as the moments they're capturing.

Mom post here:

I am teary eyed as I type this. Today was the last Elementary Chapel for this 5th grade class (my son’s class). During this “Legacy Chapel” they passed the leadership plaque down to the 4th graders as they prepare to be next year’s lower school leaders.

I am so proud of our current 5th graders. This class has navigated more than anyone would have ever imagined and they have a unique bond amongst each other on this side of those collective pains. They started Kindergarten the year of the pandemic and have seen firsthand the hurt of sickness and death in this fallen world.

Still, they are joyful, playful, hard working, and compassionate in a way that constantly surprises me. No doubt that God has great things in store for them; and our school community is beyond blessed to have each and every one of them and their families as a part of it.

Class of 2033, let’s go!
